13 Feb Year 5’s Medieval Kitchen: Fast Food of the Past
Step aside, modern takeout! This week, Year 5 stepped back in time to discover what “fast food” looked like in the Middle Ages. As part of their history and DT learning, the children rolled up their sleeves to create authentic Medieval Vegetable Fritters.
The highlight of the session was recreating a traditional “Pokerounce” spice mix. Far from being bland, the students learned that medieval cooking for the wealthy was often packed with flavour. They carefully blended spices like ginger, cinnamon, and pepper to create the signature seasoning that gave their fritters a truly historical kick.
Beyond the cooking, the children practiced vital kitchen skills, including safe chopping & grating techniques as well as using their design and evaluation skills back in class to create packaging for their finished product. Well done Year 5!
