At The Winns Primary, we see lunchtime as an important part of the school day. We encourage children to have a school meal that is nutritious and tasty.
From September, children from Reception to Year 6 will no longer have to pay for school meals. Children in the nursery can receive a school meal at a cost of £2.42 per day. As of Tuesday 22nd April 2025, the cost of a school meal for Nursery children will increase to £2.59.
We encourage children to eat a balanced diet containing a wide variety of foods.
We plan meals and snacks that include a variety of food and drinks from the 4 main food groups every day. The more children try new foods, the wider the range of nutrients they will get from their meals. The Eatwell Guide uses government advice to show what a healthy and balanced diet looks like. Our menus are designed to reflect the cultural and dietary needs of all children. We aim to create a safe and inclusive environment for all children to eat and promote this through teaching and learning.
In addition and in line with other Waltham Forest schools, the meat that we will be serving will be halal. This will mean that every child can have a hot meal and choose a meat option if they wish. We will continue to provide a vegetarian option each day and also meet the needs of children who are vegan.
At The Winns, we promote healthy food and ask any children bringing packed lunch ensure it is healthy and varied. Click here for ideas!
