We are members of the Waltham Forest School Sports Network and Gold Award holders of the School Games Mark. Please find more information below.
Being members of the Waltham Forest School Sports Network (WFSSN) give us access to a diverse programme of School Games events that take place all the way through the school year. Using a portion of our Sports Premium funding, we take groups of children from year 2 up to year 6 to compete and take part in these events. It is our aim as a school that every child will have the opportunity to attend at least one School Games event before they leave us in year 6.
The SSN events fall into two broad categories – competitive and inclusive. The competitive events are aimed at children who would benefit from using their sport-specific skills in a competitive environment against young sports people from schools around the borough. The competitions encompass a range of sports, including football, athletics, netball and basketball. Often, these competitions serve as qualifying events for the London Youth Games. Children who represent the school at these competitive events are selected by our sports coaches who work with the children on the playground at lunchtimes.
The inclusive events are aimed at a wider range of children and are not necessarily competitive. These events are run to give as many children as possible the opportunity to develop their sporting skills and also to develop broader skills such as teamwork and resilience. Children who attend these events are chosen by class teachers, with senior leaders maintaining an overview of the children who have already attended a sports event, and those who are yet to take part. If you see that others in your child’s class have attended a trip but your child has not, please do not worry! Everyone will have the opportunity by the end of their time at The Winns.
