27 Mar Grandmasters in the Making: Local Chess Festival
Our school’s budding tacticians recently took part in an inspiring local chess festival organized by the charity Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC). This event highlighted our fantastic ongoing partnership with CSC, which currently provides expert Year 6 lessons and a popular after-school club for our Year 3 and 4 students.
Twenty of our pupils attended the festival, beginning their day with masterclass lessons from professional tutors. A major highlight was the simultaneous exhibition, where our students went head-to-head against professional players and former junior champions who traveled from as nearby as Walthamstow and as far afield as Singapore and California!
To wrap up the day, the children competed in six intense rounds of speed chess. Despite the ticking clocks and the pressure, our team performed brilliantly against some very experienced opponents. Their focus and sportsmanship were a credit to the school – well done to all our competitors and a huge thank your to the parent volunteers who accompanied the children on the day!
